From humble beginnings in 1998, Street Mission has been helping local
homeless and disadvantaged people on the Northern Beaches and Chatswood.
Until July 2004, we were mostly a support group, giving conditional
financial support to Manly Community Centre for the 'Emergency Food
Cupboard', 'The Burdekin Association' for food assistance, and 'Street
Work' for their food requirements.
Early in 2004, in consultation with the MCC, Salvation Army and Uniting
Church we identified a need for a 'free food service' for homeless and
disadvantaged people, and in July 2004 we started our Street Mission
Cafe, initially on Friday nights, but moving to Saturday nights to better
suit our clients.
Many of the clients that attend the Manly Community Centre, also attend
the Café.
The project has been very successful. We have 43 homeless people on
our register, and normal attendance is about 40.
The menu is usually a hot meal consisting of rice, casserole, vegetables,
meat pies, sausage rolls followed by tea/coffee with cake.
We give them a takeaway pack for Sunday including a meal and some fruit.
We carry some warm clothing, blankets, sleeping bags and candles to
give them some protection from the elements.
Perhaps most important of all, we listen to them and try to give them
comfort.
The atmosphere at the Café is so warm and friendly. Our clients look
forward to seeing us on Saturday evenings, and the volunteers find the
work most rewarding.
The Street Mission Cafe is located at the front of the Uniting Church,
West Promenade, Manly - which is opposite Manly Police Station.
Operating times are Every Saturday evening from 6-30pm till 8-30pm.

Sydney Commercial Kitchens has generously provided
the Street Café with catering equipment requirements since 2005
and now also contibutes money to assist us in our cause. Visit their
site here at www.sydneycommercialkitchens.com.au
Much of the food is donated by Sweet Sensations and Ozharvest.
And delicious rice is now supplied by 'The Last Train to Bombay', a
Indian restaurant in Manly.
