SPEAKING BACKGROUNDJo is a professional and inspirational public speaker who is frequently asked to present at conferences and educational forums. Her most recent presentation “Leaders Know Fear” at the Australian Youth Development Leadership forum, generated these comments from participants: ‘Your story has given me hope for the future – thank you’ Jo was born with cataracts, and is classified as legally blind. She speaks from her own vast personal experience, using her stories of challenge and achievement, injustice and courage to inspire and motivate her audience to achieve a greater potential. She was a member of Toastmasters International for four years, twice representing the ACT in National speaking contests. Jo has presented on drugs in sport at conferences around the world, through her work with the Australian Sports Drug Agency. In 1994 she was the first female and first visually impaired skier to be selected in the development squad for the Nagano Paralympics, and in 1996 she represented Australia in the World winter disabled championships in Lech Austria. Jo has also raced catamarans for over 20 years, is an Advanced Scuba diver, has competed in triathlon and Masters swimming and has a passion for the outdoors and adventure sports including rock climbing. In December 2000 Jo climbed Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain, at 5895 meters, and in May 2003 she accomplished the arduous trek to the base camp of Mt Everest. PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUNDJo was Scotch College dux of Humanities in 1979, then graduated with First Class Honours in Psychology from Adelaide University. She spent the first twelve years working to assist people with disabilities enter the workforce. Jo’s love of sport prompted a career change in 1997, and after completing a certificate in Community Recreation, she successfully made the transition to the sport industry. Jo has worked for the last seven years for the high profile Australian Sports Drug Agency. She was responsible for ASDA’s services to SOCOG for the Sydney 2000 Games, has worked in partnership with National and International sports, and in 2003 ran Ireland’s anti-doping program for the Irish Sports Council. Jo now works in a senior management role responsible for ASDA’s communication and drug testing services. FACILITATIONJo has over 10 years experience in facilitating workshops for a wide range of clients including athletes, sporting organisations, secondary schools, TAFE students, Commonwealth and State Government Departments, employers and disability agencies. Jo strives to understand the needs of her clients and audience in order to develop and deliver a product which achieves defined goals. Her facilitation is engaging and entertaining.
